Module breakdown:
Five modules, each building on the last from the thinking behind MatchPlay Cards to embedding them across your whole team. Work through them in order, or dip into whichever module solves your biggest challenge right now.
Module 1 — The Philosophy of Games-Based Coaching
Before you touch a card, you need the thinking behind them. This module unpacks why games-based coaching develops better decision-makers than isolated drills, and how MatchPlay Cards are designed to support that approach. You'll look at the difference between "activity collecting" and intentional session design, and start reframing how you think about what a good session actually achieves.
You'll learn:
- The coaching philosophy underpinning MatchPlay Cards
- Why games-based learning builds technique and decision-making together
- How to shift from "what activity next" to "what am I developing here"
Module 2 — The Pick – Add – Play Process
The core method of the course. You'll learn a simple, repeatable three-step process for turning any single card into a session that fits your group, your space and your objectives — rather than running challenges exactly as printed. This is the framework you'll come back to every time you plan.
You'll learn:
- How to Pick the right card for a clear objective
- How to Add constraints, rules or conditions to sharpen the learning
- How to Play it out and adjust on the fly based on what you see
- How to match cards to session goals using the seven development categories
Module 3 — Adapting MatchPlay Cards for Any Context
Real groups are messy — mixed ages, mixed abilities, different sports, tight spaces, odd numbers. This module gives you a practical toolkit for adapting any challenge without losing what it's designed to teach, so the same card can work for a Year 3 class and a county-level squad.
You'll learn:
- How to scale challenges up or down for age and ability
- How to adapt cards across different sports and space constraints
- How to adjust for group size without watering down the learning
- How to differentiate within a group without singling players out
Module 4 — Questioning, Reflection and Ownership
Great sessions aren't just well-designed — they're well-facilitated. This module focuses on the language and questioning techniques that turn a session you run into a session players think through. You'll come away with practical prompts you can use immediately, not abstract theory.
You'll learn:
- How to ask questions that build understanding, not just compliance
- How to use team, player and reflection challenges effectively
- How to create genuine player ownership over decisions
- How reflection turns a one-off session into lasting learning
Module 5 — Embedding It Across Your Team
The final module moves beyond your own sessions to how MatchPlay Cards can work across a whole school, club or organisation. You'll learn how to use the cards to evidence learning for PE assessment purposes, and how to get colleagues using the same language and approach — so the impact isn't limited to your own sessions.
You'll learn:
- How to use reflection and challenges to evidence player development
- How to build progressive blocks of learning across several weeks
- How to establish a consistent coaching language across staff
- How to help colleagues adopt the approach with minimal friction

What you need to know:

A Message From Jack, Founder of The Coaching Lab
I built the MatchPlay Cards back in 2018 to make sessions better, not add more admin. 6 decks later and 75 different countries, what coaches keep asking for was the how how to actually get the most from them. That's what this course is. I'm opening it to a small founding group first because I want your input shaping the final version, not just mine. If you're one of the first through it thank you.

Who is this course made for?
This course is built for:
- PE teachers wanting a consistent, evidence-backed approach across classes
- Club coaches looking to move beyond "session idea of the week"
- Heads of PE and coaching leads wanting a shared language across staff
- Anyone who owns a deck of MatchPlay Cards and wants more from it

Founder Access
This is the first time this course has been opened to coaches. As a founding member:
- Discounted price, locked in for good

- Your feedback directly shapes what the finished course becomes
- Spots are limited to keep this group small enough that we can act on what you tell us

Take the course. Keep developing long after it ends.
Every coach uses their MatchPlay Cards differently some are just getting started, others have been running sessions with them for years. Before we get into founding access, here's who this course is designed for, and why we're opening it up this way.
